How to Care for Sterling Silver Celtic Jewellery
Sterling silver is tough, bright and good value. With a little care it will last for decades, and you can pass it on. This guide covers the steps that matter most, because small habits make a large difference.
Why silver tarnishes
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver, mixed with another metal such as copper for strength. Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, and that leaves a dark film called tarnish. It is normal and it does not mean the piece is poor quality. Tarnish forms faster in damp rooms, so a bathroom is the worst place to keep silver.
Cleaning your silver
A soft, dry polishing cloth removes light tarnish in seconds. For more, wash the piece in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, using a soft brush to reach into the knotwork. Rinse well and dry it fully with a clean cloth.
- Avoid toothpaste. It is gritty and scratches silver.
- Use a silver cleaning cloth or a gentle silver polish for heavier tarnish.
- Check the instructions before using an ultrasonic cleaner on gem-set pieces.
Storing your silver
Keep each piece in a small airtight bag or a lined box. Separate pieces will not scratch one another, and less air reaches the metal. An anti-tarnish strip in the box slows the process further.
Wearing your silver
Put on jewellery last, after perfume, hairspray and make-up. Take rings off before you wash your hands, clean the house or work in the garden. Chlorine in a swimming pool and bleach in cleaning products can damage silver, so remove it before either.
Oxidised silver
Makers oxidise some Celtic pieces on purpose. The dark finish sits in the recesses of the knotwork and makes the pattern stand out. Polish these pieces gently, because hard rubbing takes the dark finish off the raised parts and flattens the contrast.
