UK Ring Size Guide: How to Measure Your Finger
UK ring sizes use letters, and each letter matches the inside circumference of the ring. You can find yours at home with a strip of paper and a ruler, because you need no special tools. It takes about five minutes.
How to measure
- Cut a strip of paper about 1 cm wide and 10 cm long.
- Wrap it snugly around the finger you will wear the ring on.
- Mark the point where the paper overlaps, using a pen.
- Lay the strip flat and measure from the end to your mark, in millimetres.
- Find that length in the chart. It is your inside circumference.
For the most reliable result, measure at normal room temperature. Fingers swell in the heat and shrink in the cold, so a reading taken after a hot bath may be too large. In addition, a wide ring feels tighter than a slim one, which is why a wide band may need a size up.

Charts from different makers can differ by up to half a millimetre, so treat the numbers as a close guide. If your result falls between two sizes, read the questions below. For more help, send us a message and we will talk it through.
Choosing a ring for someone else? Look at a ring they already wear on the right finger and measure the inside of it. This works well because the ring has already proved a good fit. Our Claddagh ring guide also explains which hand to wear it on.
Ring size questions
What is the most common UK ring size?
There is no safe default, because sizes vary widely from person to person and from finger to finger. It is better to measure your own finger than to guess. If the ring is a gift, check a ring the person already wears.
When should I measure my finger?
Measure when your hands are at normal temperature. Fingers swell in the heat and in the evening, and shrink in the cold. Measure two or three times on different days, then use the middle result.
Which size should I choose if I am between two?
Choose the larger size if the ring is wide, because a wide band fits tighter. For a slim band, pick the nearer size. A knuckle larger than the base of the finger also calls for the bigger size.
Can a ring be resized?
A jeweller can often resize a plain silver band. Rings with a set stone, an engraving or a tungsten band do not always allow a change, so measure with care before you buy.
